Pioneers of progress: Celebrating Hispanic Heritage and its trailblazers

Cornerstone Editors

As we enter the vibrant and culturally rich celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Cornerstone community is proud to join the nation in recognizing the achievements, heritage, and contributions of Hispanic and Latinx individuals. From September 15 to October 15, we will reflect on the lasting impact Hispanic and Latinx communities have had on shaping the future of our country.

This year's theme, "Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together," emphasizes the remarkable influence Hispanic and Latinx individuals continue to have as trailblazers in driving innovation, progress, and change. Across every industry and community, Hispanic and Latinx leaders are forging new paths, creating positive societal impacts, and shaping the future for generations to come.

At Cornerstone, we celebrate the diversity and significant contributions of our Hispanic and Latinx colleagues, clients, and partners. We are committed to fostering an inclusive environment that values the richness of different perspectives and recognizes that our differences make us stronger. This month, let's unite to honor and celebrate the pioneers of change, shaping the future with vision, resilience, and passion.

Did you know that Cornerstone has a CRG (Cornerstone Resource Group, aka Employee Resource Group) named ¡Unidos! whose goal is to raise awareness, empower, represent and celebrate Cornerstone's Hispanic and Latinx employees? This group unifies Latinx and Hispanic employees and their allies by creating a sense of community, building a network and honoring cultural traditions.

Cornerstars will commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month by participating in the various events and activities ¡Unidos! has planned. These include cultural showcases, educational programs and opportunities to engage with the Hispanic and Latinx communities within and beyond our organization. Together, we can honor the past, celebrate the present and build a brighter future of inclusivity, understanding and prosperity for all.

Planned activities during Hispanic Heritage Month include:

  • Latinos Run 5k: This nationwide Hispanic Heritage Month Virtual 5K is for everyone who believes in the power of the Latino Community!
  • Film Club Connect: Unidos is partnering with our PLUS CRG for a discussion of Mucho Mucho Amor: The Legend of Walter Mercado (2020), the iconic, gender-non-conforming astrologer who mesmerized 120 million Latino viewers with his extravagance and positivity.
  • A virtual Salsa dance party where Cornerstars can learn some moves and share their groove

The Equity Advantage: Our theory of change

In 2003, the US National Football League (NFL) implemented a rule requiring at least one non-white candidate at the final stage before hiring a coach. When the NFL implemented this rule, there were only three black coaches in the NFL. In a sport where nearly 60% of the players are black, and the bulk of coaches are pulled from the pool of players, such a disparity was emblematic of the structural and social inequities faced by marginalized groups.
